Katie Bertrand – Recipient Of The 2019 Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a School Library System Director whose work exemplifies six areas of consideration: professional leadership, professional service, information sharing, collaboration, quality programs and creative service.
Katie Bertrand, SLS Coordinator for Monroe #1 BOCES School Library System, was selected as the recipient of the 2019 SLSA Distinguished Service Award.
Speech from the Evening:
Good evening. My name is Carl Vitevitch and I am the School Library System Director at Eastern Suffolk BOCES located on Long Island and also the 2018-2019 president of the School Library Systems Association of New York State, commonly known as SLSA.
At this time, I would like to thank the NYLA Section of School Librarians and the affiliate of Central New York School Librarians, for all of your hard work and dedication over the past year to create a great conference experience for everyone.
As school librarians ourselves we value the sharing and learning that occurs at this yearly event and we as directors do what we can to support our local school librarians in attending or encouraging them to present each year.
The biggest honor a SLSA President has – is to introduce the Distinguished Service Award winner. I must say that she is a POWERFUL woman based on the criteria of Oleg Vishnepolsky, a Global CTO, that I learn from on LinkedIn, here is his list:
- Turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones, for herself and others.
- Surround yourself with smarter people, people you can learn from, people who lift YOU higher
- Work hard – tired is better than disappointment
- Be a giver, not a taker
- Do not compete with others. Simply be better today, than you were yesterday
- Read more
- Be generous
- Be humble
- Be kind
- Be confident – failures do not kill dreams, doubts do!
As a past SLSA Secretary and President, our Leadership Institute coordinator, chair of our eva efron Memorial AASL Conference Grant and our liaison to the New York Alliance of Library Systems you can see, she is deeply involved in our organization and school librarianship. Her institutional knowledge of the organization is invaluable each time we come together.
Won’t you please join me in congratulating our friend, a mentor to all, a fellow school librarian, a powerful women, the SLS Director of Monroe One BOCES and this year’s SLSA Distinguished Service Award winner – Katie Bertrand.
