Dr. Barbara Stripling – Recipient Of The 2012 Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a School Library System Director whose work exemplifies six areas of consideration: professional leadership, professional service, information sharing, collaboration, quality programs and creative service.
Danielle Yeomans, SLSA President, made the following comments at the SSL Banquet where the presentation was made:
This year’s recipient, Dr. Barbara Stripling, is well deserving of recognition for her impact in all those areas not only locally but also statewide and nationally.
To quote one of her colleagues, “There is only one individual in this world that has a favorite stage of inquiry. Barbara thrives in the Construct Phase. She lives for constructing new understandings, connecting to previous knowledge, drawing conclusions about questions and hypotheses and building new meaning.”
Barbara was a School Library System Director in New York City until January of 2012 when she took a position as Assistant Professor of Practice at Syracuse University to prepare our next generation of librarians. Our loss is certainly Syracuse’s gain.
During the course of her work as Director of NYC School Library Systems, Barbara was instrumental in developing and implementing a clear vision of library services. Under her leadership, the Office of Library Services developed a Librarian’s Handbook, Priority Benchmark Skills with Grade-level assessments, a K-12 Information Fluency Continuum, and an alignment of the Common Core Learning Standards and Information Fluency Continuum among other professional tools. Barbara’s “Stripling Model of Inquiry” is used at the Library of Congress and throughout the country.
Barbara is a collaborator at heart. She willingly shares her knowledge and resources with anyone who needs them. She has served on many committees, presented at conferences and workshops around the country and contributed to professional literature to further the interests of inquiry and librarianship practice in general.
Barbara is a dedicated professional who will continue to make an impact for years to come.
