School Library Law

School Library Systems
, a state-aided program sponsored by each BOCES or 'Big 5' city school district, provide vital library and information resources to public and nonpublic schools throughout the State. Each system operates under an approved plan of serviceand provides leadership and training through professional development activities; facilitates resource-sharing among its member school libraries; promotes advances in technology for information storage and retrieval; focuses on cooperative collection development of school library materials; and addresses the information needs of special client groups and participates in regional library issues with public, academic and special libraries. Students, teachers and administrators in each service area benefit from the activities of the program.
What does that mean? The School Library Systems assist school library media centers to provide information services for their staff and students. These information services may include loan of materials between libraries, training in resource based instruction, computer database searching, computer training, planning for and installation of library automation systems, MARC library catalog conversion, etc.

..TOWARDS THE END of developing lifelong learning practices in students and to provide free and open access to information for all citizens of New York State.

As part of their service to schools the School Library Systems of New York State have a history of coordinating favorable statewide pricing for on-line subscription databases. Coordinated buying through school library systems allows school districts to insure low cost access often not possible for individual school districts.
